About 50 percent of India’s bamboo resources are in the North Eastern States. There are 63 species of 20 genera in this region. This is 50 percent of India’s species and 87 percent genera. Besides these, there are 11 exotic varieties. Bamboo has traditional roots with the people of this region and associated with the cultural and living habits and has produced the finest bamboo artisans. The handicrafts of this region are recognized and appreciated by people over the world.

In 1999, UNDP through UNIDO had set up the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) at Guwahati for imparting training, networking and transfer of technology for various bamboo processes. Since its inception, CBTC has created a visible impact not only in India but also in the International arena. It has become the training centre not only for the locals but it also imparts training to foreigners from time to time.
